The Firm:

A modern, growing independent accountancy firm in Jesmond is looking to welcome its next team member into a friendly and supportive environment. With a small and close-knit team, this role will suit someone who enjoys working independently, takes ownership of their work, and values being part of a firm that is steadily expanding.

Working from their lovely local office—easily reached by public transport and with free on-site parking—you’ll manage all aspects of payroll for a varied client base. The firm offers flexibility, with the option to spread shorter hours across the week, and scope to work from home on quieter days once settled. Hours will vary depending upon payroll deadlines each calendar month so this does require a small element of flexibility, which will be returned during quieter times in the month or can be filled with bookkeeping.

The Role:

You’ll take responsibility for the end-to-end monthly payroll process for in excess of 40 clients all with varying size payrolls using BrightPay. Clients range from sole directors through to larger, more complex businesses, and the role includes regular communication throughout each month to ensure accuracy and compliance. As part of the position, you’ll also manage pension submissions and liaise with clients on payroll queries.

When things are a little quieter across the month there is the opportunity to support with VAT returns and bookkeeping on Xero if you have the relevant experience, alternatively you can tailor your hours.

Experience Required:

  • Strong experience managing payroll, ideally within practice or a payroll bureau

  • Confident using BrightPay or similar software

  • Comfortable working independently within a small team

  • Proactive, organised, and able to manage recurring monthly deadlines

  • Willing to work mainly from the office, with some home working available during quieter periods

  • Able to vary your days to ensure payroll deadlines are reached on the correct payment date

  • VAT returns, bookkeeping experience

  • Familiar with Xero
