The Firm:

Our client is a long-established small independent accountancy practice based in County Durham, with a loyal client base built over many years of delivering a personal, relationship-led service to local businesses. Proud of their reputation within the community, they continue to support a broad range of small businesses and sole traders with practical, down-to-earth accounting advice.

This is a close-knit practice where personality and client relationships are just as important as technical ability. The team enjoys a supportive working environment, offering flexibility, autonomy and the opportunity to play a genuinely valued role within the business.

The Role:

Working closely with the Partner, you will take responsibility for supporting a varied portfolio of small businesses, providing a true 360° accounting service from bookkeeping through to year-end accounts preparation.

Your work will include preparing statutory accounts, completing and submitting VAT returns, supporting clients with cloud accounting software, and assisting with both personal and business tax compliance matters. As relationships develop, you will become a trusted point of contact for your own clients, providing practical advice and building long-term client relationships.

This role would suit someone who enjoys being hands-on and involved in all aspects of practice accounting. Equally, for an ambitious accountant with aspirations of one day running or owning their own practice, the Partner is happy to offer genuine mentoring and succession planning for the right individual.

Experience Required:

  • Applicants must have previous experience working within an accountancy practice and be confident managing accounts preparation for a varied portfolio of SME clients.

    You will ideally have:

    • Several years' experience within an accountancy practice.

    • Experience preparing year-end accounts for limited companies and sole traders.

    • Knowledge of VAT returns and bookkeeping.

    • Experience using cloud accounting software, particularly Xero.

    • Excellent communication skills and the confidence to build long-term client relationships.

    • A friendly, approachable personality and a genuine desire to become part of a small, supportive team.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary dependent upon experience.

  • Flexible start and finish times.

  • Predominantly office-based with some flexibility where required.

  • Varied and interesting client portfolio with plenty of client interaction.

  • Opportunity to work closely alongside an experienced Partner.

  • Genuine long-term career prospects, including succession planning for the right individual.

  • Friendly, supportive working environment where your contribution will be recognised and valued.

  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays, AE pension.
